Sponsored Walk 2009
On Sunday the 29th November 2009 we had a Sponsored Walk from St. John the Evangelist Church Duncan
Terrace Islington to Westminster Cathedral. The Purpose of the walk is to raise funds for our ongoing
restoration of the chapels in our Church.
Presently the St. Francis Chapel has been restored and we hope that from our
fundraising efforts and the sponsored walk will be able to complete payment.
In the new year we hope to begin work on the restoration of the Lady Chapel.
The walk was indeed a “pilgrim” experience. It happened to be on the Sunday when it rained for most of the day.
This did not deter the walkers who ranged in age from 3 to 83. We started off in the
Rain and even though we had a brief respite along the way. Most of the walk was done while it rained.
Some of the walkers were brave enough to walk back, and it was a full downpour all the way.
Our route was; St. John’s Street to Smithfield Market, on to Farringdon Road,
down to Blackfriar’s Bridge then across to the Embankment where we walked to the
house of Parliament, pass Westminster Abbey onto Victoria Street and up to Westminster Cathedral.
I was very impressed with the St. John’s Family/Community Spirit and many asked that “ We do the walk again”.
Many thanks to all those who sponsored us and a great big thank you to the Volunteers at
Westminster Cathedral who offered us refreshments in the Cathedral Hall. We appreciated it very
Much. Thank you to Canon Christopher Tuckwell, Cathedral Adminastrator, for organising the refreshments.
