ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

St Vincent De Paul

The SVP works with the poor, disadvantaged and marginalised at local, national, and international level.

Internationally the SVP is active in 137 countries. In the Sudan currently it is feeding thousands of children every day. The group in this parish is twinned with one in India.

At national level the SVP runs many Special Projects, including soup runs, prison visits, disability projects, debt counselling sessions, etc. We tie in with this when we give food vouchers at Christmas, sponsor holiday camp places, or help to provide furniture from the SVP Community Shop in Hackney.

 For further details see the national website www.svp.org.uk.

At local level the main activity of our volunteer members is visiting and befriending, mostly the elderly who are in care homes or housebound. A visit can make a big difference to someone who is lonely or isolated.

Meetings take place in the Crypt on Thursdays at 8pm every two weeks, and last 1 hour. Visits are arranged for any time people find suitable.

If (1) you are interested in joining the SVP, or know someone who might be;
(2) you know the needs of people in Islington, or ways we might help; or
(3) you know someone who could do with a visit or some other kind of help,
please speak to a priest or a member of the local group.
