THE SUNDAY CLUB

The Sunday Club has been in existence at St. John's for more than 30 years. It is held in the crypt and is open to anyone who cares to come, from 3-5pm every Sunday of the year.  We provide sandwiches, cakes, tea and coffee (and soup in winter) free of charge. The people who come are mainly homeless, hard-up, or lonely. We run the club like a cafe and aim to provide a warm and welcoming environment where people can socialise or read the newspapers in peace. Because we open every week, people can know that there is always somewhere to go on a Sunday. Numbers attending vary from about 50 - 100 each week.

We have seven teams of 4-5 volunteers, many but not all from the parish, so that each team takes a turn in running the Club once in seven weeks on a regular basis. Volunteers buy the ingredients and make the sandwiches at home beforehand and are reimbursed for what they spend when they arrive. We have a committee of five, all members of teams, whose task, among others, is to appeal for grants from local charitable bodies to cover the cost of the food and any necessary equipment.

From time to time volunteers move away and so we are always interested in having new volunteers, either to join a team or to act as reserves in an emergency.
If you would like to help, or to know more, please phone Molly McConville (Committee member and Volunteer Organiser) on 020 7226 3887; or email: mollymcconville@gmail.com
